As their name suggests, alkaline batteries contain an alkaline electrolyte made of potassium hydroxide, which gives the batteries their alkaline properties. Because of their higher energy density, they have a longer shelf life since they are more efficient. Alkaline batteries are recommended to be used in applications where the current drawn off is normally low, such as in devices that do not require a lot of energy. Alkaline batteries have many uses in today's household, including flashlights, digital cameras, remote controls, MP3/CD players, toys, lights, and radios, to mention only a few.
